Australian Bush Bread (Damper)

[ uploaded image ]
When Aussies go camping they usually make damper bread. Here are the ingredients:

4 cups self-raising flour
½ teaspoon salt
1½ cups milk
a small bit of butter and flour to be tossed about in the pan you're cooking it in just prior to putting the dough in.

Recipe:

1. Stir the flour and salt in a bowl.
2. Make a hole in the middle of the flour and pour in the milk.
3. Stir it all together and get ready to cook it in a pot with a lid on top for 30 minutes at 220°C or 425°F.

If you were wandering about in the bush, typically you covered the dough with ashes from a campfire that was still warm and you baked it until hollow for about 30 minutes. Then you dusted off the ashes and ate it.

If you're in a kitchen or you've got a pot with a lid in the bush you just pop the dough in there, cover it and let it cook for about 30 minutes.

Most people eat it with some kind of meat, but many of us who have a sweet tooth pour cocky's joy on it which is also called golden syrup. It's a kind of sugary syrup or treacle as the Brits call it.

That's very interesting, thank you.

And here's a Russian video of a guy baking bread on a fire, the location is lake Onega, Karelia, Russia:

Yellow Sky › I love it! It looks really similar to Damper. How clever to take water from the lake to aid in making the dough!
Kimmarie › By the way, when I decided an English epithet for you, I chose 'Wrote Aussie Kimmarie' at first, but then I thought about our traditions of a solemn to a degree epithets... 'Kimmarie of Australia', you know. smile So I chose 'Australian Kimmarie', like 'Olympian Doooook', 'Arabian Elsh', 'just or splendid Leshiy'...

Is it right? What would you prefer to have there?
Indian › Sure, «Australian Kimmarie» sounds good to me. smile
